Finance Minister to grant funds to set up a plethora of pilot projects

A year after the NEMMP plan was brought to the surface; the Heavy Industries department had written a letter to Finance Minister P.Chidambaram, seeking funds for the execution of the same plan. A plethora of pilot projects is waiting to be executed on public transport through electric vehicles. Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel is shouldering the responsibility of ensuring that there is no delay in the procedure. The amount received by the Heavy Industries will be utilized in giving incentives to the State Governments or the special purpose vehicles to promote green technology for mass transportation. Talking in his letter to the Finance Minister had written, “With a view to complete the entire chain of activities by April-May, there will be an immediate need of kick starting the Electric Mobility Mission by release of incentives in the first quarter of the new financial year.”

The orbit of the whole pilot scheme encapsulates regions such as Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. However, the project is at an advanced stage of consideration in Delhi. It is believed that the NEMMP scheme will change the dynamics of transportation in the country. For instance, the mission of NEMMP would be to mitigate the damage done by the vehicles that run on exhaustible sources of energy. Probably, the government is aiming at the environmental growth of the country. In addition, the scheme would also act as a litmus test of India’s manufacturing capabilities. As a matter of fact, not many manufacturing units in India emphasize on the production of electric vehicles.

Besides, there have been instances in the past, where the execution of most of our mega projects got delayed due to environmental clearances. Since NEMMP directly aims at cutting down environmental pollution, it should be the first one to get a green signal as well. The industry will also need to match this with a much larger investment for developing the products and creating the manufacturing eco-system. Praful Patel’s contributions towards the execution of the scheme shall be instrumental towards the growth of the Heavy Industries. India is currently poised at the sixth position, in terms of manufacturing cars and two wheelers. Probably, with the success of the NEMMP, India might just outpoint its foreign competitors.

According to sources, companies such as TATA motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, TVS Motor Company and a couple others have been engaged with the production of electric vehicles.  However, the first mover advantage for such pilot projects will be M&M, which already has electric vehicles like e2o. The company is also working on its existing vehicles such as Maxximo to convert them into a hybrid or electric vehicle for mass movement. It is just a matter of time, before NCP Leader Praful Patel ensures that the NEMMP plan goes the whole nine yards, leading to the overall development of the Heavy Industries.
